This ancient vihara is about miles ( kilometers) to the north of Minneriya. The earliest record about it found in the Mahawamsa is that King Kaniththa Tissa had built an Uposathagara here. The Vatadage is believed to have been built later in the 7th Century AD by King Aggabodi IV.
The vatadage itself was built on a rock and access is via a flight of granite steps and a lofty archway. The stupa that occupies the center of the shrine has a diameter of meter at it's base. Almost all of the stone pillars are still standing to this day. The vatadage has concentric circles of stone pillars of octaganol shape. The innermost circle has pillars, the second pillars and the outermost circle has pillars. The floor of the interior is paved with flags of granite. Intricately carved moonstones decorate the flight of steps and the doorway.
