Negombo is situated in the western coast of Sri Lanka about 40 km or an hours trip north of Colombo. It is much closer to the Bandaranayaka International Airport and ideal for people who want to stay close to the airport. You can easily make excursions to other areas as well. The city is bordered by a lagoon which has diverse wildlife and helps sustain such industries as Prawn farming. The city itself is a charming town with modern amenities.
A main attraction in the city is the old Dutch Fort Gate built in 1672. It is now part of the prison complex. The Dutch Canal also built during this time is a man made canal to facilitate transportation among the Dutch administered areas. It stretches for about 100km throughout the city. It is possible to arrange boats to traverse the canal and provides a different and unique experience.
The road that stretches north to Kochchikade offers many attractions such as handicraft shops, curio shops, gem shops and restaurants catering for foreign tourists visiting Sri Lanka.
The golden sandy beach that stretches as far as the eye can see, is unexplored and retains a sense of serenity not found at other beach resorts. This is mainly because most tourist make towards the more popular beach resorts in the south of the country, which makes Negombo less crowded than the rest. In a way it is good because it helps to preserve the natural beauty of the place, but if you are looking for some peace and quite, Negombo beach is the ideal place. The hotels also make it their duty to maintain the beach. The beaches are always busy with fisherman and their equipment. For water sports enthusiasts, equipment is available through the hotels and private enterprises.
There is a strong Christian background in the city and there are many churches dotted around the city. They boast of wonderful architecture and can witness colorful processions during the time of the feast dedicated to a particular church. One of the largest cathedrals in Negombo as well as Sri Lanka is the St. Mary’s Cathedral on the main street.
An important Buddhist site is the Angurukaaramulla Templewith giant Buddha statue and some very old paintings and murals. There is alos some information of all the kings that ruled Sri Lanka so its worth a visit if you are in Negombo.
Another not to missed attraction with easy access from Negombo is the Muthurajawela Marsh off Negombo lagoon just south of the town. It is a unique wetland habitat and the largest marsh in Sri Lanka popular with eco enthusiasts. Guided boat excursions can be arranged to explore this unique habitat and the flora and fauna that calls it their home. A very informative and worthwhile tour for tourists who are fond of nature.
Traveling north from Negombo you will come across the towns of Marawila and Chilaw, both with idyllic beaches and quaint fishing villages. Further north you can tour the Willpattu National Park for more wildlife adventure.
Negombo and it’s surrounding areas are very much suited for the traveler who is looking for peace and quite away from the hustle and bustle of the city life. These beaches are ideal for some rest and relaxation guaranteed to uplift your life.
